Olympic National Park
tree frogI'll be teaching an introductory nature photography course this spring at Olympic College in Bremerton. This course is designed to give you the basic knowledge to start making great nature images.

Here's the official write up:

Learn the basics of the art of photographing nature from a professional nature photographer and workshop leader. What makes a compelling nature photo? What skills, equipment, and techniques are needed? We’ll cover equipment and exposure, composition, light, and techniques and considerations specific to nature photography.  You’ll learn what it takes to get the best possible photo in-camera. Class is taught to digital and 35mm SLR cameras, but all formats are welcome. Tripods are highly recommended.

tulips in the rainSo what does all that mean? It means you'll get a good introduction, and hopefully a good grounding, on what it takes to make a good nature photograph. Whether you're interested in taking better pictures of your garden or you want to put prints on your wall that you'll be proud of, you'll learn the basic techniques along with some tricks of the pros.
Along with the classroom lectures, you'll receive a booklet of handouts that will include all that we'll cover in class and probably a little more. I'll also add a list of resources and books that have been helpful to me as well.
In addition to the classroom sessions, we'll take a field trip on the morning of May 8 to practice some of the skills taught. This trip will be local to the general North Kitsap area.

I've designed this course with 35 mm film and digital SLR cameras in mind. We'll be changing aperture settings and shutter speeds. If you don't own a camera that allows you to make these setting you'll still learn a lot about photography and what it takes to make great images.
