About my photography

I first came to photography through backpacking trips into Olympic National Park, trying to bring back a glimpse of what I saw. And, in the circularity of fate, I found my way to the Olympic Mountains through photography. Specifically the photography of Pat O’Hara, Art Wolfe, and Ross Hamilton, whose images of the Olympic backcountry enticed me to go there myself.

I use Nikon 35mm and digital cameras for my work. Right now I’m using F5 and F100 film cameras and the D100 digital camera. I've used lenses ranging from 24mm wide angle to 500mm telephoto.  My film of choice for landscape and close-up work is Fuji Velvia, a fine-grained, slow speed (ISO 50) slide film. For wildlife I’ve been using Fuji Provia F ISO 100 and 400 slide films.

I like working with the natural light and therefore don’t use filters other than those that help me record the scene that my eyes see. The filters that I do use include polarizing filters to help eliminate distracting glare, warming filters to counteract too much blue light that results from photographing subjects in the shade on a blue sky day, and graduated neutral density filters, which are rectangular pieces of glass or optical resin that are clear in one half and dark in the other. The graduated filters help to record scenes that would otherwise be beyond the capabilities of the film to record since film can only "see" a fraction of the range of light that our eyes are capable of seeing.

All of my prints are made directly from the original slide and now from digital images captured with my D100, I don’t manipulate any of my images digitally other than to correct a scan or original capture for color and contrast, or to repair damage to an original piece of film.

All of my images are available for licensing. Please contact me if you have an interest in using any of my pictures for your projects.

“If you notice anything,
              it leads you to notice
              more
              and more”

When I began my journey with photography I found myself seeing more, noticing more; I became more aware. Photography has led me down a path to places that I might not have otherwise traveled to, both in the outer world and the inner one.

What you see in these pages are but a few of the things I’ve noticed along the way.
