News from Rod Barbee Photography
November 2017

Lots going on. I’ve posted new trips on my workshops site including Iceland, Olympic, and a waterfall trip. Plus a tease for Patagonia 2019.
I just got back from a nice fall color shoot in Oregon, and I’ve got a quick tip on getting great starbursts in your images.
Also, next year’s Aurora photo tour to Yellowknife has sold out. But if you’re still interested, be sure to let me know and I’ll start a waiting list.

Silver Falls trip report

Oregon’s Silver Falls State Park near Salem, Oregon is a gem of a park that, acre for acre, rivals any national park I’ve visited.
Everything is close and easily accessible and for waterfall lovers, hikers, and nature photographers, this combination is unbeatable.
This park is spectacular any time of year, but autumn is something special.
I recently (Oct. 2017) led a small two-day photo workshop at Silver Falls and the number of great images we came away with for such a short trip was impressive. It’s truly a target-rich photographic environment.
Read the rest on my blog.
I’m seriously thinking of running a three-day workshop here next October. Let me know if you’d be interested.

Iceland 2018

At long last I’ve posted my 2018 Iceland photo tour.
For this tour, I'm teaming with Iceland Photo Tours, Europe’s leading photography travel agency.
We’ll be visiting the Snaefellsnes peninsula, the southern coast, Vatnajokull National Park, the Golden Circle area including Þingvellir National Park, and of course, Reykjavik. We'll also be visiting at a great time of year to see and photograph auroras. See all the details here.

Silver Falls State Park in the spring

Since the Columbia River Gorge has been devastated by fire, I’ve cancelled workshop. However, I’m scheduling a different waterfalls trip to Silver Falls State Park in Oregon instead. The dates are April 26-29, 2018. You can read more about it here.

Olympic 2018

I’ve posted an Olympic National Park photo workshop for May 19-23, 2018. This workshop will be based out of Forks, WA and will concentrate on the forests, coast, streams, and waterfalls.
Olympic is my favorite park. Probably because it's the one closest to where I live and I have lots of good memories associated with it. I started backpacking there over thirty years ago and I’ve been photographing it for over 25 years. I’ve lost count of the number of workshops I’ve led and co-led to Olympic. Let’s just say there’s been a few.
May is probably the best time for forests, streams, and waterfalls. We also stand a good chance of seeing elk and of getting some decent sunsets on the coast.

One question I get at most workshops is about how to get those dramatic sunbursts. Well I got you covered. Click on over to my blog for a quick lesson.

Patagonia 2019

I'm just on the verge of posting this trip. I just need to flesh out the page with fancy words and stuff and write a pricing algorithm. Just kidding about that second one. Sort of.
But I do know the dates: April 12-23, 2019.
And I can tease a bit of the itinerary too!
On the list is Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, which includes Mt. Fitz Roy; Cerro Torre National Park in Chile, which is full of lakes and mountains, including Torres del Paine; and a day of Puma searching!

For this trip, I'm teaming with Far South Expeditions. They're based out of Punta Arenas, Chile and their guides are all naturalists, photographers, or both. They understand light and the moods of Patagonia. I'm really excited about teaming up with them.

As soon as I get the page finished and posted I'll send out a notification to the interest list and then a general announcement in the interim between this and the December newsletter. If you want the early announcement, let me know by replying to this email and I'll add you to the interest list.

In Closing

I guess that's it until next month. Except for the above-mentioned Patagonia announcement.

Here's another from my recent trip to Silver Falls taken with my iPhone from behind North Falls.

Hope you're all enjoying the autumn. Here at home, it's all of a sudden turned into winter! We've got snow falling and wind blowing. I actually love it!
