The Palouse is a photographer’s dream. Graphic landscapes, character-filled barns, rolling hills, a fence made of metal wheels, old cemeteries (well, old for the west coast). And of course, the unequaled view from Steptoe Butte. The possibilities are endless. You can literally spend the day driving the back roads and not run out of things to photograph.
This year’s Palouse workshop is a two part workshop. Or would it be two workshops tied together? Either way, you can take one or both. During the first workshop (June 16-20) Rod and Victoria will help you with the finer points of landscape photography like hyperfocal focusing, using graduated filters, setting up for panoramas, and helping you to fine tune your compositions. We’ll have early morning and sunset shoots and classroom/critique in the middle of the day (and naps, you'll need naps at this time of year). Even though part two is devoted to digital workflow, we won't be neglecting Lightroom and other things digital during part one, but we won’t be dedicating a lot of classroom time to it. Besides Lightroom/Photoshop we'll probably show you things with Nik's HDR Efex Pro and Color Efex Pro.
For those taking both workshops, we’ll use this first workshop to gather raw material for part two (June 20-23).
What a typical day might look like:
Mornings come early this time of year so we'll be leaving before dawn to catch the first light on rolling hills. After our morning shoot we'll return to our hotel for a break where you'll be given time to get breakfast and download your images. During the first workshop we’ll gather mid-day for critiques and lectures on photo technique. Late afternoon we'll head out again for our sunset shoot.
Hiking and exertion:
There will be virtually no exertion involved other than getting up at an unholy hour of the morning for sunrise shoots. Most of the time we'll be within spittin' distance of the cars (this is farm country; they say "spittin' distance" here).
